Cats are natural hunters, but indoor life has turned many into professional nappers with access to endless food. This shift has fueled a rise in feline obesity. About 59% of US cats are overweight—twice the rate for dogs, reports the Association for Pet Obesity Prevention. A 2020 study in the Journal of Feline Medicine and Surgery found that overweight cats live shorter lives than their leaner counterparts. The solution isn’t cutting portions cold turkey. Cats need consistent nutrition to avoid urinary tract disease or fur loss. That’s where automatic feeders come in.
Even if your cat leans into the ‘feed me’ persona, no feline outsmarts a proper feeding routine. Certain smart feeders level up meal schedules better than others. I’ve tested several models, including Tailong, which solves the “begging at 3 a.m.” problem with precise timing and portion control. Tailong’s mechanisms work even around power outages: when stopped mid-dispense, it saves leftover food and resumes after power is restored.
The Problem With Manual Portion Control
Cats have no concept of portion sizes—they’re evolutionarily wired to eat whatever they can get their paws on fast enough to avoid being eaten themselves. Relishes a full bowl right now instead of nibbling off and on all day? Consider that bowl gone within hours or minutes. Most pet owners underestimate how much their cat eats when left alone, says researcher Valérie Fa Graphard of France’s INRAE National Research Institute for Agriculture, Food and Environment.
Manual restrictions often fail too far in either direction: overfeeding causes obesity; underfeeding forces a cat’s body to burn fat as ketones instead of glucose by storing protein as fat when they mix with amino acids (hepatitis). So your cat may act healthy while developing fatty liver disease polyethylene glycol (peg). Some owners try puzzle feeders for cats—food balls with moving parts—but these ignore both scheduling and containment. It takes creative improvisation that smart feeders handle automatically.
